I’d like to wish a warm Happy Birthday to my Uncle Sam. He’s 230 years old today, which is old.
I was lucky to be born your nephew. I have visited far away lands and seen the life of those who are not your nieces and nephews. It was not always pretty. I am thankful I am one of yours.
I remember the good times and the bad times with you Uncle Sam.
I remember the time I went to work for you. That job involved travel to South Carolina, San Antonio and South Mississippi. I think I even still have the work boots you gave me for that job. It had it’s ups and downs, but I am glad you gave the me the opportunity. I wouldn’t be the man I am today without it. I certainly wouldn’t be as successful in the jobs I have worked since then either. I just wish you didn’t keep so much of my paycheck, even to this day.
It was not long after I went to work for you that you allowed me to help decide who your leaders would be. While at the time, I made some bad, uninformed choices, you continued to put your trust in me. I hope I don’t disappoint you.
At that same time you let me vote, I also said and did things that were not nice. I wish I had grown up faster, but I didn’t. Sometimes I wondered why you didn’t scold me for these things. Instead, defended my right to say or do almost anything I wanted. I am so lucky to have an uncle like you.
When I found my love for Christ later in life, you didn’t get jealous. You accepted the new person in my life and didn’t decrease your love for me. I just hate that some other members of the family are trying to come between us and make jealous about Christ. I hope you remain steadfast in you love for me even though there is someone else in my life.
I am also glad you didn’t give me too hard a time when I married. Since she was not one of your nieces, you could have given me a much harder time than you did. I won’t say you made it easy, but it could have been worse.
The bad times, they are few and far between. I won’t mention them here because I want to remember the good. Just know that I will always love you Uncle Sam. I will always be there if you need me.
Happy Birthday!
Oh….And I would also like to wish a happy birthday to Brother Jonathan and Miss Columbia.
that sounds really cool
And always remember: Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty are both immigrants. Uncle Sam, from England, from the pen of John Tenniel (he of the Alice illustrations), and Lady Liberty, French, from the workshop of Frederic Bartholdi.
