It’s been a few weeks since the new fall season of television started. I figured I put a few of my thoughts out there on what I am watching and what I am not. Let’s just take a quick stroll though my weekly viewing schedule.
- Monday
- Heros – Watching – Heros is one of the new shows I’ve been watching this season. It has some of the same elements as Lost in that it has an ensemble cast and mysteries that either get solved or leave you guessing every week. The story is one of…well….heros, people who have extraordinary abilities (telepathy, flying, regeneration, etc.). It’s told in a comic book format, presented on the television screen. The cast is really good with mostly “unknowns” or “little knowns”. They really deserve kudos for their performances, especially Masi Oka as “Hiro”, Milo Ventimiglia as “Peter” and Hayden Panettiere as “Claire”.
- Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – Not Watching – This show insulted my faith and my intelligence. I stopped watching after the second episode.
- Tuesday
- NCIS – Watching – I really love the criminal investigation shows that are on right now. I also love the work of Donald P. Bellisario. So there’s no doubt I would love this show. It has the mix of both the clinical and field work that goes into criminal investigation. It’s also generous with inside jokes. Sometimes I laugh harder than when I watch some sit coms.
- The Unit – Watching – Just a little action to get me through the week.
- Law and Order: Criminal Intent – Sometimes Watching – Since this show and The Unit are on at the same time, I don’t really always watch it. I have my computer record The Unit for me. Sometime I don’t really feel like watching it at the time it’s on as it can get a little rough. In that case I will usually watch Law and Order and watch The Unit episode later. I’ll usually only do this when it’s a Vincent D’Onofrio episode though. I am just not fond of Chris Noth. Aside from this show being the third in a franchise I love, I also really like the perfect performances Vincent D’onofrio always manages to pull off.
- Law and Order: Special Victims Unit – Watching – The Law and Order show are all favorites of mine. This one in particular has some of the best writing on TV. Add that to top notch acting and you have one heck of show.
- Wednesday
- Jericho – Watching – Another show in the working the “Lost” formula all it can. The folks behind this one really make it work too. While the acting is just a few levels above mediocre (the one stand out being Gerald McRaney, who’s good in everything he’s in), the mystery the writers have built into the show keeps me guess and more importantly coming back for more.
- Lost – Watching – 4 8 15 16 23 42.
- Thursday
- CSI: Crime Scene Investigation – Watching – This is another one of my criminal investigation show. While I haven’t grown any fondness for the spin off shows, I do enjoy the original. This one has a slight bit of “nerd factor” that I think keeps me interested.
- ER – Watching – This show started not long after I quit my job as a medical attendant in one local ERs in Memphis. I guess that gives me some sentimental reasons for watching this show. While the entertainment value has gone down over the years, it’s still watchable.
- Friday
- Doctor Who – Watching – I’ve been a “whovian” since I was a kid. WHile I feel the new show got off to a shaky start, it’s improved with the addition of David Tennant as The Doctor. The recent episode where we saw the return of Sarah Jane Smith really brought back found memories for me. I hope they keep it up.
- Battlestar Galactica – Watching – Gritty and dark are the best words to describe this reimaging of the 70′s classic sci-fi show. While I feel the season started off going a little too far with the whole “changing peoples perceptions” theme, it is back on track now. I wait patiently for the new episodes every week. Well, excpet this week where we as start a two week break….
- Law and Order – Watching – I just love these criminal investigation shows. I can’t help it. This one is of course the grand daddy of all of them on TV now. While it has lost some of it’s appeal in it’s almost 17 years on TV, I image I’ll watch it until it goes off the air.
- Saturday/Sunday
- Star Trek – Watching – Yes, I am talking about the venerable old 60′s show. The one that started it all. Well, incase you been under a rock for a couple of weeks, they’ve modernized it. Think about what George Lucas did to the first three Star Wars movies. They have updated the special effects and remastered the video and audio. They have also redone some of the music. I am actually enjoying it. I have noticed some gaffs, like when Spock mentions in Catspaw that sensors aren’t picking up and atmospheric cloud formations. The problem is, when they show the Enterprise orbiting the planet, the new special effects includes atmospheric cloud formations. Whoops….
So, if you gotten this far you’re interested in my TV viewing habits. That means you must have some of your own. What shows are you watching? What do you think of the ones I’ve already mentioned?
