What’s the deal with MacOS X and file extensions?
After watching Cliff Ravenscraft’s latest Mac rant, I had to respond.
Click here is the video Cliff posted.
I’m not really sure what an obvious bug in Garageband has to do with the ability or lack there of of the operating system MacOS X. I tried the same experiment, but took it a little farther.
I think my video shows that what Cliff found not proof that all us Mac people are liars, but rather that at worst there is some kind of bug in Garageband. On the other hand, since some folks are reporting that the capitalized extension issue does not manifest itself when they try it, it might actually be expected behavior and Cliff and I have some setting configured that makes it happen.
I’d like to hear if anyone know why this happens in Garageband or if it happening to you. Please feel free to comment.

Yay you! That was a great response! As a Mac Gal, I’ve never said that Macs don’t need extensions, just that they don’t need the dot plus three or four letter ending like PCs. The fact that I can double click the .MP3 icon and it will launch QuickTime and play and change it to .mp3 and it still plays and drop the .mp3 altogether and it still plays, means that the OS doesn’t need it, right? I’m a little offended at Cliff Ravenscraft calling Mac people liars. Even those “geniuses” he spoke to didn’t imply to me that the extensions aren’t needed but rather the dot and the stuff after it - they even say later that the extensions are built-in. Now, maybe I know to word it right because I’m a convert to Mac, but still calling us liars? And then using such a limited test to “prove” us wrong? That was just a wee bit tacky. And FWIW, I had the same results with the test in GB - it doesn’t import with the CAPS version, but does with lower case or NO EXTENSION. Anyway, I’m rambling - great response. I hope he has a bit of a retraction in his next podcast.

I can assure you that I used the tone that I did in my video partially for the shock value and as a means of attracting people to my Help, iGot a Mac! Podcast which is a mac podcast from a fan but not a FANBOY perspective.
I’m no expert by any means and yes my .MP3 from the edirol recorder will certainly work and open up in both itunes and quicktime.
I’ll admit that I’m on the DEFENSE about macs because of the pervasive attitude of mac fan boys. I would have owned a mac months before I had got mine if it were not for a few annoying mac evangelists who told me that I needed to do so immediately because any other computer was inferior.
Anyhow.. I no know it’s a bug in GB but still the fact that the bug work around is simply changing the extension to lower case says that those extensions do matter at least some times.

Sorry if I’ve offended anyone.> But if it means people listening to more of our shows just to see where they can prove me wrong and help me understand better.. Well… I suppose it’s almost worth it.
