Suzette and I just got back from a trip to Europe. This little prize came in real handy. I had also ordered the camera connection kits. Let me explain a little of what went on.

We went to London for a week and Paris for a week. For the first week in London, my mom tagged along with us. It really nice, since visiting London was on her bucket list. We all three had cameras of course. Suzette and I both brought our Macbook Pros and I brought the handy iPad. The problem was that mom’s camera had a mini-USB connector on it. We didn’t have the cable for that. What her camera also had though was an SD card for memory. All I had to do was stick the SD card in the camera connection for the iPad and then sync the iPad with my MBP. All of the sudden, mom could post all the pics she had taken on Facebook with no problem.

Of course that’s not all I found useful about having the iPad with me in Europe. I used he MLB at Bat app to keep up with the Braves games. This app is excellent and well worth it on the iPad if you’re a baseball fan. Using the Universalis app meant not going over the 50 pound weight limit on my luggage by packing my LOTH books. I also watched some TV on the plane with it. It was also a serious conversation starter. Keep in mind that the international release of the iPad was while we were in Paris, so few people over there had so much as seen one before. On the train ride from London to Paris, I made a new friend from Australia who wanted to know all about.

So here I am now typing in this new blog post much later than I wanted to, but finally getting it done. Aside from the MLB app, there are a few I don’t my iPad would be complete without. I’m using the Blogpress app right now. This will be the first post I’ve done with it, so the verdict is still out. I love the Netflix app. There’s nothing like being able to sit on the couch and watch a movie on Netflix. You don’t have to put a disc in the PS3 and you can plug in the headphones if someone is being disturbed by your entertainment. The Twitterific app for the iPad is hands down the best Twitter client around. I love being able to view twitpics in a popout. If you get one for these devices, be sure to check out The Weather Channel MAX+ app too. I just checked it myself to see if it’s going to rain on Saturday, since I’m playing in a golf tournament.

All in all, I am very happy with the device. I’m glad I got it. You know, I wasn’t going to get one at first. I was pretty determined to wait for the second generation iPad. But, I had an intervention. A friend of mine bought one while visiting here in the US. He’s from Canada and it was not yet released there. More on that later. Anyway, he is not what you would call an “Apple enthusiast”. But he picked one up in the Apple and could not put it down. After hearing him rave about it, I have to see one. Since there’s a Sephora at the same mall as the Apple Store here in Nashville, I never have no trouble talking Suzette into going there. I have to admit that I could not put it down either. Unfortunately, I had to. They were sold out and it was closing time. The next day I ordered mine from the website.

Now I said I’d mention some more about my friend. He had a little trouble with his. It wasn’t so much a technical difficulty as a silly difficulty. Since the iPad hadn’t been released in Canada, he couldn’t buy apps for it on iTunes. He also couldn’t buy the camera connection kit online. In the first paragraph of this post, you might have seen what at first looks a typo. I mentioned “camera kits”, plural. I ordered two of them and sent one up to him as a gift. I’m such a rebel.

Since I just started podcasting using Garageband and he’s been doing it for a while, I tend to ask some n00b questions. Now there are somethings to keep in mind. Rob and I are both Macintosh users. Garageband is a multitrack recording software that come with the Mac OS. It’s not quite perfect for podcast, but it’s getting better. Obviously from our comments, it still has a few shortcomings in the podcast recording department. In most people’s opinion, the best software to record podcasts is Castblaster. Unfortunately, Castblaster ony works with Microsoft Windows. With all that in mind, the conversation we had should be amusing. Let’s take a look….

Marc: If I record bumpers for my show, is there a way to add them to the section at the bottom for loops?
Marc: If not, how do you manage them?
Rob: I keep them in iTunes and pull them over from Audio in the media browser
Marc: I was afraid of that…. That just seems wrong to me. But I guess I will have to get over it.
Rob: yeah I’m hoping they will fix that
Rob: in a perfect world CastBlaster would have a Mac version
Marc: So it’s all Adam and Eve’s fault…..
Rob: yes Original Sin caused Microsoft

I laughed for a good four or five seconds after that one…..

Well, as with any computing device, it turns out the Palm Foleo will only be as good as its software. And the more we hear about the software available or the Foleo, the more we warm up to this little device. First of all, the Foleo runs Linux, which means you might be able to slap some custom software on there in addition to the default applications.

And it turns out you can also use the Foleo to access and control your home or work PC on the go. LogMeIn is showing off a software client for the Palm Foleo at this week’s LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco.

LogMeIn is a “remote control” software for a computer. What it does basically is allow you open a “window” on one computer that will actually be the screen on another computer. For instance, you have a laptop and a desktop. When you travel with the laptop, you would be able to open a window on your laptop that would allow you to see and do almost everything on your desktop back home. It of course requires an internet connection on both ends. Otherwise it’s pretty simple.

If people find more inventive ways such as this to use this little machine, it might have a future. HM…Maybe it wasn’t a yawn after all.

It carries their “Pre-order pice Guarantee” as well. I’ve only pre-ordered a couple of books before, so I can’t say how well it works. It does however sound like they are trying to take care of their customers with it. If I wanted Leopard on release day and there wasn’t an Apple Store here in Nashville, I might be inclined to do this. I don’t think however that we’ll see the frenzy on Leopard’s release we saw with say, the iPhone. I bet a lot of Mac users will take a “wait and see” approach with it. I know I will. The new feature really aren’t enough for me to install until some of the user community has already decided to be the guinea pigs. ;)

The only real big announcements made were complete duds.

First we have Safari browser for Windows. This has got to be the biggest “what were they thinking?” moment for me since Palm announced the Foleo. I mean really. I’m a die hard Mac user and I don’t use Safari. What makes anyone at Apple think that Windows users will convert in droves to Safari? Most of the people who would even have a clue what they doing by installing Safari on their PC would probably already be hooked on Firefox, or maybe Opera.

The other biggie was that there would be a way for third party developers to develop apps for the iPhone. They would have hooks that would allow access to functions on the phone. So basically the answer is that you can develop apps for that sub-par browser I just mentioned and that’s your way to put your own apps on the iPhone. My first thought was that it was a real cop out. My second thought was that anyone who develops…..at all…..would realize this already. I’m not sure why it was even a topic for discussion at this. It was jsut very disappointing.

A few other things of note were of course the previews for Leopard and some gaming news. The Leopard previews were really cool. I’m really looking forward to it. It doesn’t come out until October though. Apple recently announced that it was delayed due to having to shift some resources from Mac OS development to iPhone development. It makes me wonder where the resources to port Safari to Windows came from. The gaming news was that two major gaming players (sorry, couldn’t resist), EA and ID would start producing Mac versions of their games. This is a good thing. Even with the new version of Parallels that allows for 3DFX support for Windows VMs, I would still much rather play games in the native OS.

Overall though, I considered this Stevenote to be rather lame. To think, I could have spent that time getting a cavity drilled or something along those lines instead of sitting at my desk waiting for MacRumorsLive to refresh. All the Twitter conversation was fun though.

One of the main reasons for the post is to make my co-worker Andrew jealous. While he’s lucky enough to have been issued a MBP by our company, it’s one of the old ones. I had to pay for it myself, but mine is the latest and greatest.

Right now I am working on getting the software installed and setting copied from my iMac. If I run into any issues, I’ll pass them along. So far it’s been smooth sailing though. I was kind of surprised to see that the only software updates were to a couple of applications, Keynote and Pages if IIRC.

So far it doesn’t seem to generate anything near the amount of heat the first rev of the MBP Pros did. It’s also doesn’t make as much noise. As a matter of fact, I haven’t heard a peep out of it except the tune it plays during the initial setup.

On a side note, you can find plenty of hardcore tech information here….

On another side note, I wonder why it took so long for the Apple store here in Nashville, to get them. The store in Memphis had last Wednesday. The store the guy I linked to above bought his at his local store lasst Tuesday, the day Apple announced them.

The comments over there aren’t the half of it either. I have received a ton of email saying thanks for the help.

Well, here’s the bad news. I can’t use this extension anymore. Ever since switching to one of the Intel based iMacs, Spellbound quit working. It seems the extension is actually a porting of the code used by Thunderbird, Firefox’s sister email app for spell checking. Of course in order to work on so many different platforms the way it does, it has to call some OS specific libraries. Well, the Mac libraries it’s expecting are the PowerPC (read “Old Mac”) libraries. This makes it not work on the Intel iMacs. Now that you’ve read all that, you probably think you’ve heard the bad news. I ‘m sorry to say you haven’t. According to this forum, there are no plans to fix the extension. Yes, that is the bad news. But have no fear. There is good news. The reason no one is too eager to fix this nifty little extension is simple. The next major release of Firefox will have this functionality built in. I can’t wait.

I mean it….Really……I can’t wait. I hope I spelled everything right here….

Since Suzette started school this semester, I’ve been driving a lot. On her school days (MWF), I drive forty five minutes to her school, then an hour to my office. My only real disappointment is the lack of support from some of the software products out there for the new Intel systems. Sometimes it’s just hard to find the universal version of the program though, like in the case of the iScrobbler plugin used to report your listening habits to last.fm. I use this myself to keep my “Current status” page updated with the last few songs I’ve listened to in iTunes. I’ve also been able to find other music I was not familiar with but ended up liking through this service.
So, like I said I’m really ready to fully go into my Intel Mac experience yet. But I did want to go ahead and put this out there. You can download the universal binary of iScrobbler by clicking on the link below.

A lot of people really rely on these things, as I do now. But allow me to be self indulgent for a second. I found out recently that the company I work for has as a contingency plan purchased a load of Palm Treo handhelds to pass out to personnel that have an essential need for communication of the type these devices provide. This means Marc has a Treo sitting somewhere with his name on it just waiting for the Blackberry service to get shutdown. It makes my mouth water. To be honest, I hate the Blackberry. The main difference between the two is that the Blackberry is really phone that does the PDA and e-communication functionality, whereas the Treo is a PDA that does the phone and e-communication functionality. This makes a big difference when trying to work with it from a technical perspective. The Blackberry has a limited number of application that run on it. It has very limited storage space for such applications. The Treo on the hand running either the Palm OS or Windows Mobile, depending which model you get has a virtual plethora of applications available to it. For me, syncing is also much easier with either of the Treo models than with the Blackberry. I use an Apple Mac at home and the only software option for syncing a Blackberry to Mac sucks in my opinion.  So there you have it, some insight into Marc’s inner desires.  I hope you enjoyed it.

I’ve been playing with it and will probably be uninstalling Spelbound in favor of it soon. Unlike Spellbound, you just install it and it works.

UPDATE AGAIN: Well, as you can see the Google bar spell check functionality doesn’t play nice with the WordPress WYSIWYG editor.  Oh well……  I’ll leave this post the way it is to serve as a warning to you all.  Well, at least anyone who uses WordPress.

I had to search far and wide to find this, so I thought I would post it here in the hopes of making it easier for others to find it. Firefox is of course the browser that’s taking the web by storm. As often as I comment on websites as well as post here (well, maybe not so often) and as dyslexic as I am, I have to have a spell checker in my browser. I had found the solution with spellbound. The problem is this, when I updated to Firefox version 1.5.0.1, spellbound broke. I mean broke in a big way. I tried installing the latest from their website, but it refused to install saying that it was incompatible with the Firefox version. I know how to fix that, by downloading and modifying the config file that comes with the Firefox extension. But I wasn’t sure if there might not be a reason this extension doesn’t work with the new version of Firefox, so I decided to research it a little. What I found it totally awesome. The latest development version (meaning “beta”) of spellbound would not only work fine with Firefox 1.5.0.1, but it also adds a lot of neat new features including “as you type” checking. COOL!

Here’s what you need to do to get it installed. This of course assumes you already know how to install and uninstall Firefox extensions. If you don’t you need to learn how to do that first by reading this. First uninstall the old version of spellbound. I didn’t have to restart Firefox at this point, but I would suggest you go ahead and do that just to be on the safe side. Then go here to find the latest dev version of the extension and install it. You’ll find the link in a forum post at the top. Just click on the words “Install SpellBound Dev” here or on that website. That will start the install of the extension. You’ll need to allow the site in your preferences. To this, you should see a bar at the top of the browser window that says “To protect you computer, Firefox prevented this site”..etc…. Just click on “Edit Options”. A new box will appear that will ask you to edit your security preferences. Click on “allow site”, then “OK”. All this does it allow you to install extensions from the server they are located on. It does not give anything access to you computer. If you’ve had to go though all this to allow the site, you will need to click on the download link again.

At this point, you’ll need to follow the instructions int he pop-up box to install the extension. Think you’re finished? Think again. Now you need to install a dictionary. Go to the website here to see and install the available be dictionaries. You might have to go through the above procedure to allow the site and install these too, as they are also simply extensions for Firefox.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone out there so they don’t have to go through the Googling and guesswork I did. Have fun and happy spell checking.

In a bit of unintended humor, Wall Street closed Apple’s stock Tuesday, the day the company unveiled its first Intel processor-based computers at Macworld, at $80.86.

In other news, Microsoft stock closed at $6.66 that same day.
