A witness said Sunday that police raided the concert as it was ending late Wednesday near the town of Karaj, some 30 miles west of the capital.

Somehow I don’t think my haircutting habits would float in the presidential race either. As the wife keeps reminding me, I need a haircut really bad. So it seems that while John Edwards is willing to pay $400 for a cut and style, I won’t even pay $14…

My mom sent this to me in an email. I told her she’s needs a blog. She replied with, “So post it somewhere”. Since I (almost) always do what “mom” tells me, here you go.

My, how the world has changed!

I graduated from public high school without…

Ever wearing pants to school
Ever riding a school bus
Ever going a day without PE (from track and volley ball to dance)
Ever going a year without either band or chorus
Ever getting a free lunch
Ever going a day without the pledge and a prayer over the “PA” system
A computer
A cell phone
A pager

I graduated from public high school with…

The equivalent of a college education now
4 years of Latin – I actually translated Beowulf from Latin to English
2 languages (French and Spanish)
Algebra, geometry, trig
Biology
General Science
Civics
American and English literature
World history
Tennessee history
American History
Home Economics
Typing
Band and Chorus
4 years of PE
Public speaking

Maybe that’s why I made 28 on the ACT when I finally took it 33 years after graduation.

I started my first job ….

Still couldn’t wear pants – skirts and dresses only
No copiers – Mimeo??? I still remember the smell. Reports were done on an IBM selectric typewriter using mimeo stencils. You actually had to use a razor blade to scrape the ink off if you made a mistake.
No faxes – we used snail mail
No desk top computers – only terminals from the monster that was kept in the air conditioned ninth floor…the whole ninth floor.
Can you say key punch???
No word processing software – IBM selectrics??
No spreadsheet software – Graph paper…
No ten-key adding machines – comptometers. I must admit that the 10 key came out shortly after I started working.
At my first job I made $2.53 per hour and thought I had died and gone to heaven.

New words to my vocabulary over the years.
Computer
Personal computer
Cell phone – I actually had one of the first. The battery was bigger than a bread box.
Byte and all the mega, giga, etc., that goes with it.
Microwave oven
Cable TV
Remote control – Yes we actually had to walk over to the TV to change the channel or adjust the volume.
Garage door openers. If you had a garage, you had to stop, get out of your car, pull open the door, drive your car in, then pull the door back down. Why do you think so many houses were built with carports?
Terrorism – It was a word, but it didn’t have quite the same meaning as today.
Blow Dryer
Curling Iron
Microdermabrasion
Illegal alien – People who came into this country from all over the world were immigrants…and the vast majority were legal.
Politically correct – I’m really tired of this word and all the angst it causes.
Cruise control – Hard to get in a 57 Chevy
8 track player – Couldn’t get that on a 57 Chevy either
DVD – Again, 57 Chevy may not be the perfect venue
Compact disc
VCR – If you wanted to see a movie, you actually had to go to a movie theater
Digital anything
Interstate highway…the “long and winding road”…usually two lane
The Beatles – speaking of “long and winding road”
The Rolling Stones
The British Invasion – of the 1960’s
Flower Power
Hippie
Yippie
Groovy
Cool
Anything that plays music other than a vinyl disc called a record album.
Significant other – Either you were or you weren’t
Paradigm change– duh??? Please.
Peter Principle – Seen a lot of that
Employees as associates – Again with the PC-ness
Quality management – assumes you have quality to manage in the first place
Watergate
Iran-Contra
Sex – as Bill Clinton defines it.

I just found this band. Their MySpace page says they’re from Nashville and they have a great sound. You can find clips of their music on both their MS page and their website. Both sites are linked below. The unusual thing about this band is that they have a hard core conservative theme to their music. While that’s not necessarily outside the norm for the Nashville music scene, it is for the hard rock scene. While I don’t necessarily agree with all their stances, I do find it refreshing to listen to some good rock and roll that’s not overrun by hard left politics.

Go check them out!

I’m sorry, but this is just dumb.

A man who grabbed a 14-year-old girl’s arm to chastise her after she walked in front of his car, causing him to swerve to avoid hitting her, must register as a “sex offender,” the Appellate Court of Illinois has ruled.

No way…

The trial jury accepted Barnaby’s version of the story, but found him guilty of unlawful restraint of a minor – a sex offense under Illinois law.

Uh….OK….

Trial Judge Patrick Morse ordered registration reluctantly, acknowledging it was “more likely than not” Barnaby only intended to chastise the girl. “I don’t really see the purpose of registration in this case. I really don’t,” Morse said. “But I feel that I am constrained by the statute.”

Give me a break……

This man, who all parties involved including judge and jury say did nothing sexual with the girl being forced to register as a sex offender. If there was a requirement that all people who do moronic things have to register as a moron, that would make more sense. Well, I say that it would make sense in that case maybe. But what would be the point? Wouldn’t everyone be registered? Which leads me to my biggest concern about this case. If this becomes a common occurrence, don’t we run the risk loosing the legitimacy of the sex offender registry?

Go read the story and then come back and tell me what you think.

Since I’ll be out of town on voting day, I went out to “rock the vote” today doing early voting. Now I want to say this loud and clear. I don’t care who you are, or what you believe. I have two requests.

The first is for everyone who is eligible to go out there and vote. I don’t care who it is you are going to vote for, whether you vote for the same folk I did or not does not matter to me. What matters to me is that you exercise your right to vote. Many people who have gone before us have fought and died for you to have that right. Don’t let them down.

The second is that you make an informed decision based on your own set of values. In my case, my decisions were based on the information at hand about the ballot items (candidates and/or initiatives). I took this information and based on my values (largely dictated by my faith), I made a decision. If there was a ballot item I was uncertain about, I left it blank and berated my self for not being better informed. Most of the blank were the local races here in Gallatin. I just haven’t lived here long enough to get a good feel for the local politics. So take that as an example of who you can make an informed decision.

Again I beg, please consider voting next week.

One of my favorite priestly blogs is written by a Fr. Martin Fox in Ohio. I just had to mention this post. It presents a (note a “a” and not “the”) Catholic perspective on the history of the spread of Islam. Here’s the start of it:

Sadly, all was peaceful and a garden of delights for the peaceful prophet and his followers until suddenly, one day in the 7th century, the armies of Byzantium, led by the pope, landed at Acre and marched to Arabia, and at the point of the sword, demanded the prophet (blessed be he!) comply to their outrageous demands. The peaceloving followers of the great prophet gathered around to witness the shocking scene:”You are the prophet of Islam?”

“Yes.”

“We demand that you invade our lands; form armies and sweep across North Africa; then we will gladly renounce our faith and become Muslim,” bellowed Pope Leo the Great.

It only gets better..

Go give it a read.

I’ve been with them for a little over a year and I love them. There have been service problems in the past, but Matt Heaton, the CEO of Bluehost keeps a blog where he updates everyone on the latest news for Bluehost, including what’s being done to prevent problems that have cropped up in the past. Well, his most recent post said this:

Bluehost does not and will not tolerate adult material of any kind on our servers. Sometimes profit comes second and personal responsibility and ethics come first. I am not telling other hosts to not provide adult hosting services, but I wish that they would come to that conclusion on their own.

What do I say to that? I say kudos to Mr. Heaton! It’s wonderful to find someone out there that will not let the almighty dollar dictate how he runs his business. Don’t get me wrong, I know thaat Mr. Heaton is in this business to make money. It’s just that I am proud to be the customer of someone that refuses to compromise his own moral judgement in order to make a dollar.

Bravo Mr. Heaton! Bravo Bluehost!

Suzette and I have an appointment with the USCIS (formerly INS) in Memphis on Thursday. Since she got here in October of 2003 we have worked tirelessly to legally get her status as a resident alien formalized. I have spent over a thousand dollars in pursuit of this goal, as well as spent hundreds of hours filling out paperwork, standing in line and performing other tasks.

Now, after a US Citizen has gone through all that trouble to get his wife’s status in the US permanent, can you understand why he might be a little pissed off that somewhere near eleven million people in the US might get the same result by simply breaking the law by illegally crossing the boarder?

From George Washington’s toothlessness (he has no teeth left by middle age), to Grover Cleveland’s gout, to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s polio, to Ronald Reagan’s Alzheimer disease, and finally to George W. Bush’s colon polyps, presidents throughout history suffer from the same diseases and ailments like the rest of us.

Of course then you get to Jimmy Carter, the healthiest president according to this page. What is his single illness? It’s “severe chronic hemorrhoids”.

ZAGREB, Croatia – An ethnic Serb seen killing Muslims in a nationally televised video was convicted of war crimes Thursday and sentenced to 15 years in prison, with the judge saying he had shown “no mercy or compassion” for his victims.

Serbian paramilitary member Slobodan Davidovic “actively participated in inhuman treatment, humiliation and liquidation” of six young Muslim men from Srebrenica in 1995, Zagreb district court judge Miroslav Sovanj said in his ruling.

He was seen in the video %u2014 shown by prosecutors at the trial of former Yugoslav President
Slobodan Milosevic and then broadcast across the former Yugoslavia %u2014 helping kill six young Bosnian Muslims who had their hands tied behind their backs.

Only 15 years? ONLY 15 YEARS???? I saw this video. The actions of the Serbs in it were barbaric and inhuman. This guy should be put in a damp dark cell for the rest of his life with no contact with the outside world but three cold meals a day.
