Check it out. Here is a screen grab from the Official “Lost” Podcast’s recent behind the scenes vidcast. During the intro with Chris White, you can see a load of “Lost schwag”. But one thing is very out of place……or is it?

You’ll notice I’ve circled what appears to be a Luke and Laura lunchbox. There was a plot line in General Hospital where Luke and Laura were on a tropical island. I really remember it that well since I was a youngster and it was really my grandmother who watched General Hospital, not me….I swear….

Can anyone fill in the blanks on this plot line? Anyone else have any theories as why this lunchbox would be there? I mean c’mon. A “Luke and Laura” lunchbox can’t be that common. They must have put it there on purpose. I’m also not sure what the comic book looking thing is on the top self. Anybody got a clue?

I know I talked bad about this show before it even came out. That was my mistake. Journeyman has been a joy to watch. I really like how they’ve woven the mythology of the time travel into the present day, how Dan’s actions in the past have an impact on his life and his family in the present. Plus, this is one of those shows that just makes you wonder what’s going on, much like Jericho and of course Lost.

I just really hate they’ve decided to cancel. I want to know what’s going on…..

Well, it sounds like there will be yet another adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

C.H.U.D. reported a rumor that a new movie version of Frank Herbert’s classic SF novel Dune may be in the works. The site cites Byron Merritt, who runs the official Dune novel forums and is a member of the Herbert family.

It’s already been done not once, but twice. I think I preferred the SciFi Channel’s version a little better. While David Lynch’s version was fun to watch, he managed to take an already weird story and make it too weird.

I’ve made the mistake of judging movies before knowing too much about them before, so I won’t take that risk now. But it will be interesting to see who’s involved.

Now I just want you to read the synopsis froma story on SCIFI.COM about a new series on NBC that will be called Journeyman.

Journeyman stars Kevin McKidd (HBO’s Rome) as Dan Vasser, a newspaper reporter who finds himself inexplicably thrown back into different time periods within his own lifetime. He can’t control when or where he goes, but he seems to have a mission to change the future by affecting the lives of strangers in the past.

Now is it just me, or do I remember the first time this was on TV? Back then I think it was called “Quantum Leap“…..

From the opening dialogue Quantum Leap:

Theorizing that one could time-travel within his own lifetime, Dr. Sam Beckett led an elite group of scientists into the desert, to develop a top-secret project known as Quantum Leap. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Dr. Beckett prematurely stepped into the project accelerator, and vanished…

HM….”within his own lifetime”…..”within his own lifetime”…..

HM indeed…..

If Journeyman goes down the path of saying that some external or supernatural force is guiding the main character through the past to correct things that are going wrong, then we know this really is a rip off.
I’m a little surprised that there weren’t more nominations for Lost. I felt that Matthew Fox deserved a best actor nod for more than one of his performances. I also thought Dominic Monaghan gave more than one nomination worthy supporting actor performances. On the other hand I do agree that Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emmerson deserved the nominations they got. Heck, I don’t care who he’s up against, Michael Emmerson deserves to win. He is just that cool. I’m also surprised that Battlestar Galactica didn’t get any nominations for acting. It is after all the best show on television.

This is strange. Not only does my package from Amazon have to go through Memphis to get from Kentucky to here in the Nashville area. It seems it also had to go through 1969 in order to get from two days ago to now.

You can go to this Flickr page to see the whole thing. No photoshop type stuff is gong on here either. It is pure MAC OS X screen capture.

It also makes me wonder why since it is coming from Kentucky and is already in Memphis (not to mention the fact that it can time travel), why should I not expect it for five more days. HUMPH!

USAToday has the story of how ABC and the producers of Lost have announced the last episode, which will air in 2010.

The end is in sight for ABC’s acclaimed island mystery Lost, but fans will have to wait until 2010 for all the answers.

I actually kind of like this idea. I think it works for a show like Lost because it will give the producers a solid timeframe for building out the rest of and finishing the story. They have said from the beginning that Lost is not like shows like Desperate Housewives or ER in that they are here to tell a story. From the beginning, they knew this story had a start and finish. Once you reach that finish line, you are truly at the end.

It reminds me somewhat of Babylon 5. When JMS started Babylon 5, he had 5 seasons worth of story to tell. Keep in mind what I just said, I said “story”, not “stories”. He knew the basics of the story, including the end when he started. It had to develop overtime, but it still followed the same outline. The same seems to be true with Lost. I think setting a target end date give the writers and the producers the opportunity to the story on their own terms. It allows them to create their peaks and valleys in the plot as needed to tell the story right.

To be honest, I’m even more excited now than I was before hearing this.

SCI FI Channel has increased its episode order for the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica to 22 from the original 13

But what’s my opinion? Well, I think Saul Tigh says it best when he says:

CRAAAAAAPPPPP!!!!!

I was actually pleased with the idea of only having 13 episodes. I really feel this show’s at it’s best when it’s going for quality, not quantity. There have been some pretty bad “filler” episodes this season. I personally would rather not have to deal with those and just get on with the story. I guess it’s pretty obvious that the whole 13/22 episode episode has just been a bargaining ploy…..

UPDATE:

2008????

You mean we gotta wait 10+ months to not find out what’s going on????

CRAAAPPPP!!!!!!!!

What are these people thinking? It looks like yet another SciFi masterpiece is going to get turned inside, chewed up and swallowed and puked out on movies screens across the country. I just don’t get it. Leave the classics alone and think up something new. How hard is that.

In my job, I have to write documentation for the projects I work on. If I just took the same documentation from past projects, changed the name and somehow decreased the value of them, I would get fired. How is it that these Hollywood producers that do the same thing with these great old movies and TV shows keep their jobs????

SCI FI Channel announced that it has renewed its Peabody-winning original series Battlestar Galactica, ordering 13 new episodes. Production will resume this summer in Vancouver, Canada, with an eye toward a January 2008 premiere.

I know some will be disappointed with the number “13″, but I’m not. Personally I could do without the filler episodes we’re getting nowadays that do nothing to advance the story.

It looks like we’re getting another one this week that may well end up being just a rehash of an episode from the original series. While it was just a subplot of the episode, there were people trapped on the wrong side of a bulkhead after a Cylon attack in “Fire in Space”. I’ll reserve actual judgement on it until I see the episode tonight. Even if it’s not a retread though, I still have a feeling it will be less than my favorite episode. We’ll see.
I just wish they had spent some time building up the tension over her past. This is something could have slowly built up over the past few episodes, but they missed the chance to make it even better drama by doing so. All in all, tonight’s episode was a lot better than watching Rocky last week.

I do have one question though. Did I miss some dialogue or was there no explanation why a bunch of viper pilots were flying the raptors?

I just read about this at the Star Trek Movie Blog.

Zachary Quinto, who plays the villain Sylar on the hit show ‘Heroes’ wants to be the new Spock.

I think he’d be perfect for the role. He’s a great actor and looks the part too. For anyone who doesn’t watch “Heroes” (you should), he also played the computer geek character Adam from season three of 24. I suppose it’s possible too since Mr. Qinto’s co-star on Heroes (Greg Grunberg) has known JJ Abrams since around kindergarden. Mr Abrams is of course best known as one of the producers of both Lost and Alias and director of Mission Impossible III. He is also slated to produce the next Star Trek movie. Rumor has it that the movie with be a prequel to the Original Series from the sixties. It supposedly will depict a young Kirk and Spock. Like I said, I can see Mr. Quinto playing the role of Spock and he does have the connections. It should be interesting to see if this goes anywhere.

TV Preview: Pittsburgh native Quinto is face of ‘Heroes’ villain

If you read my previous post on my TV viewing habits, you could probably tell that I really like the new show “Heroes”. I’m glad I spelled it right this time.

If you watch this show too, then we are both in for a special treat. It turns out they have signed a couple of scifi geek heavy weights.

As much of scifi nerd the character “Hiro” is on the show, how cool is it that George “Sulu” Takei will be playing his father? I saw the report on this a couple of days ago.

Then just today, I saw another Heroes casting announcement. Christopher Eccelston will be joining the cast. Nothing is known yet about the character he’ll be playing, other than that it be a powered character. Christopher Eccelston is of course best known as the ninth doctor from the popular British scifi series “Doctor Who“.

I’m looking forward to seeing the fireworks likely to erupt from both of these casting choices. It can only be good times for the viewer. IIRC too, this will be the first time an actor who portrayed The Doctor will appear in US TV show since Tom Baker had a guest spot in Remington Steele. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

It’s been a few weeks since the new fall season of television started. I figured I put a few of my thoughts out there on what I am watching and what I am not. Let’s just take a quick stroll though my weekly viewing schedule.

Monday

Heros – Watching – Heros is one of the new shows I’ve been watching this season. It has some of the same elements as Lost in that it has an ensemble cast and mysteries that either get solved or leave you guessing every week. The story is one of…well….heros, people who have extraordinary abilities (telepathy, flying, regeneration, etc.). It’s told in a comic book format, presented on the television screen. The cast is really good with mostly “unknowns” or “little knowns”. They really deserve kudos for their performances, especially Masi Oka as “Hiro”, Milo Ventimiglia as “Peter” and Hayden Panettiere as “Claire”.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – Not Watching – This show insulted my faith and my intelligence. I stopped watching after the second episode.

Tuesday

NCIS – Watching – I really love the criminal investigation shows that are on right now. I also love the work of Donald P. Bellisario. So there’s no doubt I would love this show. It has the mix of both the clinical and field work that goes into criminal investigation. It’s also generous with inside jokes. Sometimes I laugh harder than when I watch some sit coms.

The Unit – Watching – Just a little action to get me through the week.

Law and Order: Criminal Intent – Sometimes Watching – Since this show and The Unit are on at the same time, I don’t really always watch it. I have my computer record The Unit for me. Sometime I don’t really feel like watching it at the time it’s on as it can get a little rough. In that case I will usually watch Law and Order and watch The Unit episode later. I’ll usually only do this when it’s a Vincent D’Onofrio episode though. I am just not fond of Chris Noth. Aside from this show being the third in a franchise I love, I also really like the perfect performances Vincent D’onofrio always manages to pull off.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit – Watching – The Law and Order show are all favorites of mine. This one in particular has some of the best writing on TV. Add that to top notch acting and you have one heck of show.

Wednesday

Jericho – Watching – Another show in the working the “Lost” formula all it can. The folks behind this one really make it work too. While the acting is just a few levels above mediocre (the one stand out being Gerald McRaney, who’s good in everything he’s in), the mystery the writers have built into the show keeps me guess and more importantly coming back for more.

Lost – Watching – 4 8 15 16 23 42.

Thursday

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation – Watching – This is another one of my criminal investigation show. While I haven’t grown any fondness for the spin off shows, I do enjoy the original. This one has a slight bit of “nerd factor” that I think keeps me interested.

ER – Watching – This show started not long after I quit my job as a medical attendant in one local ERs in Memphis. I guess that gives me some sentimental reasons for watching this show. While the entertainment value has gone down over the years, it’s still watchable.

Friday

Doctor Who – Watching – I’ve been a “whovian” since I was a kid. WHile I feel the new show got off to a shaky start, it’s improved with the addition of David Tennant as The Doctor. The recent episode where we saw the return of Sarah Jane Smith really brought back found memories for me. I hope they keep it up.

Battlestar Galactica – Watching – Gritty and dark are the best words to describe this reimaging of the 70′s classic sci-fi show. While I feel the season started off going a little too far with the whole “changing peoples perceptions” theme, it is back on track now. I wait patiently for the new episodes every week. Well, excpet this week where we as start a two week break….

Law and Order – Watching – I just love these criminal investigation shows. I can’t help it. This one is of course the grand daddy of all of them on TV now. While it has lost some of it’s appeal in it’s almost 17 years on TV, I image I’ll watch it until it goes off the air.

Saturday/Sunday

Star Trek – Watching – Yes, I am talking about the venerable old 60′s show. The one that started it all. Well, incase you been under a rock for a couple of weeks, they’ve modernized it. Think about what George Lucas did to the first three Star Wars movies. They have updated the special effects and remastered the video and audio. They have also redone some of the music. I am actually enjoying it. I have noticed some gaffs, like when Spock mentions in Catspaw that sensors aren’t picking up and atmospheric cloud formations. The problem is, when they show the Enterprise orbiting the planet, the new special effects includes atmospheric cloud formations. Whoops….

So, if you gotten this far you’re interested in my TV viewing habits. That means you must have some of your own. What shows are you watching? What do you think of the ones I’ve already mentioned?

I just thought that was cool and had to mention it.

I’m working on a TV show post. I’ll go work on that while I watch the rest of Heros. Just a quick thought before I do that though. It was just revealed that the missing painting was of Peter’s mangled body. I guess you’re supposed to assume he’s the one who dies. But, with his power to absorb other people’s abilities, couldn’t he regenerate using Claire’s power? We’ll see…

Anyway, I’m can’t really say I was sorry to see him go, especially now that David Tennant has shown himself to be so excellent in the role. It’s not some much I didn’t like Eccleson, I just feel he didn’t bring any real eccentric magic tot he character.

I’ve been down with pneumonia the past week and a half, so I haven’t had much to time to mention the new fall season of TV shows here on WT. I will say that I’ve seen Jericho and I like it. This show has a lot of mystery about what’s really going on, a lot like Lost. I was really glad to find out that the powers that be aren’t going to leave us hanging like they have in the past. Yes, CBS has ordered a the rest of the season of Jericho episodes.

CBS has given a full-season order to Jericho, its hit post-apocalyptic drama, the network announced. The show, about the aftermath of a nuclear attack, has averaged 11.3 million viewers and a 3.4 rating among adults aged 18-49, boosting CBS’ performance on Wednesday nights.

And there was much rejoicing.
If you haven’t watched this show, I suggest you wait until you have a chance to watch it from the beginning, even if that means you have wait for reruns.
